FIRE SALE: New York City Firefighter Date-Auction

Fire Sale

The City Reliquary Presents:
FIRE SALE: New York City Firefighter Date-Auction
One HOT Benefit!
February 18th 2010, 6 – 10pm

WILLIAMSBURGH, BROOKLYN: The horns are blaring, the people are cheering, and a handful of New York City Firemen are in the heat . . . of the spotlight for the City Reliquary’s upcoming benefit. You read that right – the City Reliquary, home of such salacious artifacts as vintage subway tokens and World’s Fair Memorabilia – are having a Date Auction. But not just any Date Auction – a FIRE SALE: New York City Firefighter Date-Auction; One HOT Benefit! – a real life opportunity to take one of New York’s Bravest out on the town for a night of romance and adventure. Who knows – they might let you taste their three-alarm chili! Firefighters from Williamsburgh’s 35th Battalion and beyond will be there for your perusal . . .

The City Reliquary’s Firefighter Date-Auction; One HOT Benefit also coincides with our current exhibit – Company Journals of the Southside Firehouse, curated by Firefighter Patty D’Emic of Hook and Ladder 104.

Because this event is simply too hot for our community museum, the Date Auction will take place at the Knitting Factory, at 361 Metropolitan Avenue, immediately across from The City Reliquary. Doors open at 6 and the Auction begins at 7. All proceeds from the door will go to help the City Reliquary raise direly needed operational expenses. Help us reach our seasonal goal of $20,000 by treating yourself to a hot date while you keep YOUR community museum from extinction.

THurd THursday & New Shows at CR

Hello Friends of The City Reliquary,

We are happy to announce the return of our spectacular THurd THursdays events. This week, on THursday January 21st, from 7:00-10:00 PM we will host a reception for TWO new exhibits at the museum.

In our Exhibition Hall, we are proud to announce the opening of “Company Journals of the Southside Firehouse”
An exhibit of historic logbooks detailing the daily work of Williamsburgh companies Engine 221 and Hook & Ladder 104 since the turn of the century, beautifully hand-written with fountain pen in calligraphic form and displayed with photographic and printed support materials of the era; Curated by Firefighter Patrick D’Emic L104.

Also, in the COMMUNITY COLLECTIONS window we are proud to present, Amanda B. Friedman’s Unicorn Collection.

We hope you’ll join us THis THurd THursday at 7:00 for refreshments courtesy of the Brooklyn Brewery.

Halloween at The City Reliquary

The City Reliquary is proud to host the Southside Halloween Festival, an evening-long multi-disciplinary party with candy, music and games. Created especially for the City Reliquary and the Brooklyn Public Library, there will be an atmospheric adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Cask of Amontillado,” Fortune Teller Mikaela Corbo sharing her gift to all who dare to listen, neighborhood students from El Puente performing a dance act specifically created for this event, local musician Jeff Davis playing the musical saw, games, refreshments, and a sideshow act! William Allgood will serve as the evening’s ghoulish Master of Ceremonies. There will be goody bags and candy for the young and old alike.

The Southside Halloween Festival is produced by local artists Stephen Cedars and Christina Latimer, and is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).

Hailing from Gainesville Florida, but steeped in the Brooklyn and Northeast indie-folk pop strains, Holopaw plays music that has sweetness and grit, longing and potential violence, lulling strings undercut by anxious guitars, lilting “la’s” turning sinister and demanding. Horns, keyboards, guitars, cymbals and harmonic convergences tell fairytales with unsure endings.

May 16: The Candela Structures: A New York City History Mystery opening

intro_3-big

Have you seen these prefab structures? Aren’t they cool? They’re located on the Flushing Bay Promenade in Queens, a few hundred yards from the Mets’ new stadium. Millions of people have seen them over the past 45 years, but almost nobody knows anything about them.

The Candela Structures: A New York City History Mystery, a new exhibition at The City Reliquary, tells the story of these underappreciated fiberglass formations and the surprising culture of mystery and misinformation surrounding them, from their origins as exhibit spaces during the 1964 World’s Fair to their current status as neglected but enduring landmarks on the Queens waterfront.

The exhibit will kick off with an opening reception on May 16th, 7 pm. Arts and crafts materials will be provided, so guests can sculpt their own Candela Structures, and the Reliquary will also provide “Save the Candelas” letters and envelopes, so guests can petition city officials to provide the Candelas with sorely needed repairs. Beer and other refreshments will be provided, and DJ Stacher will kick out the jams with mid-1960s pop-garage, psychedelia, and Shea Stadium live concert hits.

The exhibit has been produced by journalist Paul Lukas and architect Kirsten Hively, who developed a crush on the Candela Structures last year and decided to investigate their backstory. What began as a quick research project turned into an eight-month odyssey of dead ends, wrong turns, and architectural obsession. The resulting exhibit should give these underrated structures the attention they’ve long deserved.

The Candela Structures: A New York City History Mystery will remain on view at the Reliquary through June 28th.

February 26th, 2006

Ladies and Gentlemen,
Happy Presidents’ Day! When current presidential turmoil troubles you, turn to the folks at The City Reliquary. We’ve been working hard on the new City Reliquary Museum at 370 Metropolitan Ave. While we aren’t yet fully prepared to open our doors, we would like to offer you a special event to honor presidents, collectors, artists, and of course most importantly, our beautiful new windows!

The City Reliquary Inaugural Sidewalk Reception FEATURING:

Pedro Genao’s Abraham Lincoln Statue
Christy Gast’s Collectible Presidential Plates
AND
Honoring the first African-American female presidential candidate, Charlene Mitchell
AT:
The new City Reliquary windows at
370 METROPOLITAN AVENUE at Havemeyer Street
ON:
Sunday, February 26th beginning promptly at 12:00 noon

SERVING:
Civic pride, honorary degrees, and delicious refreshments.

Our featured presentation will include:
A special appearance by our honored guest, CHARLENE MITCHELL.
Ms. Mitchell, the first African-American woman to run for President, represented the Communist Party in 1968. A civil rights activist for over 50 years, Ms. Mitchell is also the founding National Coordinator of the Committee of Correspondence for Socialism and Democracy. She serves as national co-chair of the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, the organization that grew out of the campaign to free Angela Davis. A portrait of Ms. Mitchell was included in a large wall mural called “When Women Pursue Justice,” which was recently completed by Artmakers, Inc. at 498 Greene Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant. She will be honored with a special presentation by our presenter of Presidential Plates, Christy Gast.

A collection presented by CHRISTY GAST of COLLECTIBLE PRESIDENTIAL PLATES with
Limited Edition FEMALE PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES
In honor of the 2004 campaign season, Ms. Gast created a set of Limited Edition Lady Presidential Candidates Collectible Plates, featuring the first ten women to run for President. The candidates and their stories are largely unknown, although a number of them were major players in their times. Some of those included are: Victoria Woodhull, whose running mate was Frederick Douglass, was the first female stockbroker on Wall Street. Margaret Smith, Shirley Chisholm, Bella Abzug, and Patsy Mink all served in the legislature in the mid-twentieth century, and Charlene Mitchell, a native New Yorker, has been a civil rights activist and union leader for 50 years. Thanks to Melissa Memory, Rodney Harrison, and Kevin Harper for generously lending their collections of original collectible Presidential Plates.

PEDRO GENAO’s Life-size Abraham Lincoln Statue made of 100% hand-felted wool.
Pedro moved to New York in 1992 from the Dominican Republic and soon became employed as a Maintenance Technician at the Steiner School, a part of the Waldorf school system. There he watched some of the teachers’ craft presentations working with wool. He has since taught himself many finer techniques of NEEDLE FELTING and is now considered to be easily among the best in his field. The Abraham Lincoln statue presented in our windows was created by Pedro during the course of 3 years and over 300 hours. Pedro estimates that the statue was pointed with a single needle over 3 million times. As he should be, Abraham is standing tall at over 6 feet 4 inches not including his 9-inch top hat and supports his own weight with absolutely NO INTERNAL ARMATURE.
