The City Reliquary proudly presents:
The English Kills Project
Thurs., Aug. 25 @ 7 PM
Admission: FREE

The ENGLISH KILLS PROJECT is a socially engaged, bio-art project founded by local artist Henry G. Sanchez. It presents new concepts for constructed wetlands and mussel habitats for Newtown Creek in Brooklyn, a federal Superfund site. In collaboration with the Newtown Creek Alliance, it fabricates floating bio-remediation experiments in the English Kills tributary located in the Bushwick/East Williamsburg neighborhood.

Henry will present videos of the egrets, ducks, geese, killifish, shrimp and mussel ecosystems that exist in NYC’s most polluted waterway. Participants are invited to draft designs for constructed wetlands and public access on design templates. Come learn about the discovery of new mussel colonies, the existence of a natural spring, and the potential for floating habitats in English Kills!

Ocean Music

The City Reliquary proudly presents:
Ocean Music & Marcus Jade
Sat., Aug. 13 @ 7 PM
Tix: $5

Ocean Music is a raucous and rousing live band led by Richard Aufrichtig. The band draws inspiration from sources as varied as the Chilean author Roberto Bolaño, thirteenth-century troubadour and Minnesinger lyrics, Gregorian chants, the Major and Minor arcana of the Tarot, Zen Koans, Child Ballads, and modern day celebrities of the new-song movement. While composing the six songs in this thematic cycle, Aufrichtig ran the Williamsburg Community Circus arts festival. Mostly through his curation of this festival, he encountered five other musicians who feature prominently on this recorded album, all of whom bring distinctive elements into its sonic world. These musicians are: Benjamin Engel, Jack Randall, Ben Seretan, Alice Tolan-Mee, Trevor Wilson and Ethan Woods – all lead artists in formidable groups of their own.

“…an explosive update on Replacements-Pixies-Van Morrison…” – Anearful

Give them a listen on their Bandcamp page, and RSVP to the Facebook event!

Brooklyn-based Indianapolis native Marcus Jade will play an opening set of blues and folk tunes off his album Black Life Blues.

“That Slapstick Show”: The Warped Mind of Henry “Pathé” Lehrman

13708282_756474754495394_3241943648587093020_o (1)

The City Reliquary Proudly Presents:
That Slapstick Show! Inside The Warped, Demented Mind of Henry “Pathé” Lehrman
Sat., Aug. 6 @ 8pm
Admission: $10

Curated by comedy film historian Nelson Hughes
Co-organized and co-hosted by Tommy José Stathes of Cartoons on Film

This *outdoor* installment of That Slapstick Show! will focus on one of the silver screen’s most significant and controversial comedy creators of the early 20th century. Through an evening of selected short subjects and one feature length film, we will discover the man who was once nicknamed “Mr. Suicide”—the notorious Henry “Pathé” Lehrman (1883-1946).

Along with Mack Sennett, Lehrman was one of the co-founders of American film comedy, though controversy has kept him from sharing the prestigious ranks of Sennett, Hal Roach and Al Christie. Lehrman directed some of the biggest names in early film comedy: the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle, Billy Ritchie and Lloyd Hamilton, among others. Lehrman was known for his temper and for putting film cast & crew in occupational hazards—and even being ousted from companies he founded.

Despite the controversies, Lehrman knew comedy like the back of his hand. W’ell explore his film career during his tenure at Keystone, Fox and First National with rare surviving archival material where Lehrman serves as actor, writer, director and producer.

-SPECIAL ADDED ATTRACTION-
This event will also include two very special guests: Author and biographer Thomas Reeder will be speaking about his upcoming book on the life and career of Lehrman. Also joining us will be Bob Harned, author of the book Sally Phipps: Silent Movie Star. Harned is the son of Phipps, who was directed by Lehrman in the feature film we plan to screen.

So join us for where it all began—at The City Reliquary’s beautiful backyard! It’s a silent-comedy-under-the-stars spectacular as we shine the spotlight on the life, career and myths of one of the silver screen’s early comedy titans.

Live musical accompaniment will be provided by pianist Charlie Judkins!

Light refreshments available for purchase from Standard ToyKraft.

Louque…brings into his tunes all the elements of his native New Orleans-a touch of blasphemy & reverent respect…as well as the blues, country and rock & roll. – Rolling Stone

“Bear witness to a soundscape of proverbial empty rooms reserved for the heartbeats of insects in ancient speakeasy cathedrals. Paddle your way down a blue river with a black heart, to a deep-end sprinkled with constellations – hand in hand with your fellow man on a glorious mystery ride. And when the sun shall set on this night, you’ll leave better than you came, synapses repaired by a serenade from the prophet of sugarcane poetry and dub heartbeats.” -Rebecca Rebouche

Community Collections: Like a Virgin

Like a Virgin: Madonnas and Madonna from the Collection of Kay Turner

Virginlore_May Day veneration_early 20th century

The City Reliquary proudly presents the Community Collections display of images of the Virgin Mary from folklorist, artist, and Williamsburg resident Kay Turner. Turner has a long-term scholarly interest in representations of the Virgin and a consequent personal interest in images of the pop star Madonna. She is an expert in folk Catholic belief and has collected numerous images of the Virgin Mary in forms such as altar statues, planters, medallions, and even emblazoned on pillowcases and socks. Turner’s collection presents a powerful female figure beloved by believers and non-believers alike through the lenses of faith, art, fashion, and kitsch.

Turner will discuss her collection at the opening reception for this Community Collections display on Dec. 8 at 7 PM, the Feast Day of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Light refreshments and “virgin cocktails” will be served.

Kay Turner served as Folk Arts Director for the Brooklyn Arts Council from 2000 to 2014. Turner initiated numerous field research projects resulting in public programs such as Praise in the Park: Musical Expressions of Faith; Williamsburg Bridge 100th Anniversary Celebration; and Brooklyn Maqam: Arab Music Festival. Turner continues to teach as Adjunct Professor in the Performance Studies Graduate Program at New York University. She holds a Ph.D. in Folklore and Anthropology from the University of Texas, Austin. Among her publications are Beautiful Necessity: The Art and Meaning of Women’s Altars (Thames and Hudson); I Dream of Madonna: Women’s Dreams of the Goddess of Pop (Harper Collins); and Transgressive Tales: Queering the Grimms (Wayne State University Press). Turner was recently elected President of the American Folklore Society (2016 – 2018). Turner, also a performer and musician, is currently at work on a book and performance project called What a Witch, a rethinking of the fairy tale witch in folklore and popular culture.
