Show-and-Tell Returns to the Reliquary on May 19th!

OPEN MIC SHOW-AND-TELL

Open Mic Show-and-Tell, hosted by Paul Lukas, returns to the City Reliquary on May 19th.

Open Mic Show-and-Tell is exactly what it sounds like: Anyone can bring an object of personal significance and talk about it for up to three minutes. No theme, no agenda — interesting stuff and the stories behind them are their own reward.

Objects that were featured last time included a 1950s report card from a Detroit vocational school, a 40-year-old vanilla bean, and a ticket from Burning Man. But it isn’t about the objects — it’s about the stories. Look in your pocket or your purse — there’s probably good show-and-tell fodder there, whether you realize it or not.

You can either (a) bring an object and be prepared to talk about it, or (b) just be part of the audience (because you can’t have show-and-tell unless there are people on hand to be shown and told). Either way, it’s a good time.

Doors and sign-ups at 7p; showing/telling commences at 8p

Show-and-Tell Returns on April 20!!

Open Mic Show-and-Tell, hosted by Paul Lukas, returns to the City Reliquary on April 20th.

Open Mic Show-and-Tell is exactly what it sounds like: Anyone can bring an object of personal significance and talk about it for up to three minutes. No theme, no agenda — interesting stuff and the stories behind them are their own reward.

Objects that were featured last time included an electro-shock therapy device salvaged from an abandoned hospital, a very obsessively annotated copy of a book by Proust, and a copy of Martha Stewart Living in braille. We’re expecting even better objects, and more interesting stories, this time around.

You can either (a) bring an object and be prepared to talk about it, or (b) just be part of the audience (because you can’t have show-and-tell unless there are people on hand to be shown and told). Either way, it’s a good time.

Slice Harvester opening

slice.jpg
Join us as we celebrate an iconic New York institution: the classic $2.50 slice!

That’s the theme of our new exhibition, produced in conjunction with Colin of Slice Harvester, who’s on a mission to sample a slice from every single pizzeria in New York City. The Reliquary is proud to be presenting hundreds of his photos of slices and the pizzerias that serve them — a greasy, cheesy celebration of this essential component of New York life.

We’re throwing a gala reception this Friday, March 18, at 7 pm, complete with complimentary slices from local pizza outlets. Colin will also be reading excerpts from the latest issue of Slice Harvester’s printed zine — an event not to be missed. So grab those oregano and red pepper shakers and come on by!

Show-and-Tell Returns to the City Reliquary on March 17!

Open Mic Show-and-Tell, hosted by Paul Lukas, returns to the City Reliquary on March 17th. (Yes, that’s St. Paddy’s Day, so we’ll have some Irish whisky-spiked cider on hand, along with our usual beer, but otherwise no crazy Irish/green shenanigans.)

Open Mic Show-and-Tell is exactly what it sounds like: Anyone can bring an interesting object and talk about it for up to three minutes. No theme, no agenda — interesting stuff and the stories behind them are their own reward.

Objects that were featured last time included a scrapbook made from torn-out pages from The New Yorker, a special good-luck keychain, a faded Polaroid, and wooden spoon that had been repurposed into a spanking device. We look forward to seeing even better treasures — and hearing even better stories — this time around (although the spanking spoon may be hard to top).

You can either (a) bring an object of personal significance and be prepared to talk about it, or (b) just be part of the audience (because you can’t have show-and-tell unless there are people on hand to be shown and told). Either way, it’s a good time.

A Warming Winter Benefit, featuring Libations & Dissertations

Friday, February 25th, 2011, 7-11pm

At the Brooklyn Kitchen

WILLIAMSBURGH – The cold, dreary winter months in NYC are upon us. There’s only one real way to break out of the slush and snow, according to the City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization –it’s with cocktail and conversation! Nothing else warms the mind and blood like Boozin’ and Schmoozin’ with the City Reliquary!

Please join us on Friday February 25th, at the Brooklyn Kitchen for an evening of awesome alcohols and delectable edibles. We’ll have FIVE (count ’em, FIVE!) cocktail tables, one beer table and one wine table. Our cocktails will include: The Ginger Lee No. 2, a dark rum daquiri from The Richardson, expertly mixed by Joel Lee Kulp and Jon DeRosa who will also explain how to make it at home. Sother Teague of Rye will concoct the Jack Rose, an Applejack Sidecar and talk about its pleasures and properties. Tim Sultan of Sunny’s Bar in Red Hook has invented and will present the Irish Manhattan (whiskey!). Nicole Austin of Kings County Distilling will pour shots of their un-aged whiskey and talk about what makes their booze so booze-a-riffic! And Breuckelen Distilling will have their marvelous Gin for sipping, straight up, on the rocks or as a G&T.

For Beer we’ve got Brooklyn Brewery and their Local 1 & 2 as well as Sorachi Ace. Accompanying the beer, local beer writer Josh Bernstein will talk about the exciting directions that new breweries are headed in. Tom Potter and Allen Katz, partners in New York Distillery will explain about making whiskey in Brooklyn. Lastly, Red Hook Winery will be pouring sips of their exciting wines, while Chris Nichoison and Mark Snyder are going to talk wines. And rounding up the Schmoozing section, Manhattan Borough Historian Michael Miscione will talk about Brooklyn’s historical need for water, gently reminding all guests of their personal need for the clear stuff following the tippling.

But thats not all! That’s just the booze! For food we’ve got tasty treats from The Meat Hook, Saltie, The Commodore, Roebling Tea Room, Momofuku Bakery, coffee from Oslo and more! DJ Sister Kate will be spinning vintage jazz and rhythm and blues. Goodie bags will be given to all guests.

$100 Happier Hour tickets at the door enable patrons to enjoy an extra hour, from 7-8, of small talk and nice pours; $75 for Happy Hour tickets from 8-11pm. Goody Bags will be provided to all. All proceeds will benefit the City Reliquary Museum and Civic Organization, a non-profit museum in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. Advance tickets available on Brown Paper Tickets here: http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/155768 and on the City Reliquary’s Events Calendar.

Show-and-Tell Returns to the Reliquary on Feb. 17!

It’s coming up on that time of the month again, as Open Mic Show-and-Tell, hosted by Paul Lukas, returns to the City Reliquary on Feb. 17th.

We look forward to seeing even better treasures — and hearing even better stories — this time around.

You can either (a) bring an object of personal significance and be prepared to talk about it, or (b) just be part of the audience (because you can’t have show-and-tell unless there are people on hand to be shown and told). Either way, it’s a good time.

Show-and-Tell Returns to the City Reliquary Jan. 20!

Open Mic Show-and-Tell, hosted by Paul Lukas, returns to the City Reliquary next Thursday, Jan. 20.

Open mic show-and-tell is exactly what it sounds like: Anyone can bring an interesting object and talk about it for up to three minutes.
