Unveiling

The unveiling finally took place on October 28, 1886. President Grover Cleveland, despite having vetoed a bill to fund the pedestal, agreed to preside over the opening ceremony. Cleveland’s presence transformed the unveiling into a national celebration. Newspapers estimated that, combining those actually on the island with those standing on rooftops and waterfront parks, over one million people watched the dedication.

Bartholdi, who was in attendance, allegedly said “The dream of my life has been accomplished.” A deafening roar supposedly echoed across New York Harbor when crews lowered the veil hiding Liberty’s face.

Initial critical reaction proved largely positive, but criticism mounted as the statue’s message of liberty and freedom became embroiled in period politics.
