The City Reliquary Proudly Presents:
That Slapstick Show! Inside The Warped, Demented Mind of Henry “Pathé” Lehrman
Sat., Aug. 6 @ 8pm
Admission: $10

Curated by comedy film historian Nelson Hughes
Co-organized and co-hosted by Tommy José Stathes of Cartoons on Film

This *outdoor* installment of That Slapstick Show! will focus on one of the silver screen’s most significant and controversial comedy creators of the early 20th century. Through an evening of selected short subjects and one feature length film, we will discover the man who was once nicknamed “Mr. Suicide”—the notorious Henry “Pathé” Lehrman (1883-1946).

Along with Mack Sennett, Lehrman was one of the co-founders of American film comedy, though controversy has kept him from sharing the prestigious ranks of Sennett, Hal Roach and Al Christie. Lehrman directed some of the biggest names in early film comedy: the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Roscoe Arbuckle, Billy Ritchie and Lloyd Hamilton, among others. Lehrman was known for his temper and for putting film cast & crew in occupational hazards—and even being ousted from companies he founded.

Despite the controversies, Lehrman knew comedy like the back of his hand. W’ell explore his film career during his tenure at Keystone, Fox and First National with rare surviving archival material where Lehrman serves as actor, writer, director and producer.

-SPECIAL ADDED ATTRACTION-
This event will also include two very special guests: Author and biographer Thomas Reeder will be speaking about his upcoming book on the life and career of Lehrman. Also joining us will be Bob Harned, author of the book Sally Phipps: Silent Movie Star. Harned is the son of Phipps, who was directed by Lehrman in the feature film we plan to screen.

So join us for where it all began—at The City Reliquary’s beautiful backyard! It’s a silent-comedy-under-the-stars spectacular as we shine the spotlight on the life, career and myths of one of the silver screen’s early comedy titans.

Live musical accompaniment will be provided by pianist Charlie Judkins!

Light refreshments available for purchase from Standard ToyKraft.
