Oakdrive captures the feelings of mystery, nostalgia, and loss attached to the family house. Mosiah Rashaad’s parents abandoned the family house, called Oakdrive, but the family was still responsible for maintaining the property. Mosiah and his family would travel to Oakdrive from their new home in Decatur to cut the kudzu and grass overtaking the house and to replace the wooden boards that shuttered its windows and doors. In caring for the house, Mosiah began to see the building as a relic of his family’s history and his childhood.
The Oakwood podcast is an episodic compilation of recordings that capture the emotions brought about by change and life’s constant ambiguity. Underlying motifs couple with soundscapes and a hint of gallows humor to present a compelling reflection of the cultural interplay in a melting pot society. In Mosiah’s father’s words, “Wake up–we goina’ Oakdrive…”
